J. B. Hixson's book is not only the most readable,
the clearest, and most concise book on what the gospel is
and is not that I have read, it continues to serve as a reference
work to which I return again and again. It simply refuses
to stay on the bookshelf. Hixson accomplishes a rare feat
in today's theological world: he is both sharply analytical
and interesting. If you want one book on the subject of the
gospel which says it all and says it well, this is it!
Dr. Mike Halsey, President
Free Grace Seminary, Atlanta, GA
Distortions of the gospel began soon after
Paul wrote his first letter (Galatians). He viewed such distortions
as a threat to the very core of Christianity. It is our very
fallen nature which tempts us to make the gospel more attractive,
usually introducing some sort of meritocracy to beef it up
or democracy to water it down. Dr. Hixson puts the modern
distortions into five catergories, all in order to help us
identify the true gospel. This is a very valuable work.
Dr. Dave Anderson, President
Grace School of Theology, The Woodlands, TX
The gospel you believe will impact your philosophy
of ministry as well as determine the content of your evangelism.
J. B. Hixson is a friend of the gospel. In this new work,
he also seeks to be a guardian of the biblical gospel. Theological
analysis and contemporary case studies make Getting the Gospel
Wrong both thought provoking and readable. Dr. Hixson offers
scholarly analysis with pastoral passion. His extensive research
and careful exegesis are combined with clearly illustrated
analysis. Hixson concludes that definite and dangerous additions
to and subtractions from the gospel are prevalent among evangelicals.
You may disagree with some of his conclusions, but I believe
you will agree the serious discussion is overdue. Hixson
gives us a carefully considered place to start.
Dr. Timothy K. Christian, Professor and Dean
of Students
Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, NE Campus
Schenectady, NY
It is grievous to admit, but this book is absolutely
needed today. Hixson takes head on the present confusion
about the gospel and cogently, biblically, and logically
presents a true gospel. The best presentation I have ever
read. It should be required reading for all who are in the
ministry or who want to understand what it means to believe
the gospel of our salvation.
Dr. Charlie Bing, President
Grace Life Ministries, Burleson, TX
The issue regarding the content and clarity
of the gospel has been the seminal issue for the Church from
the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15 down to this present day.
Dr. Hixson provides both theological analysis and pastoral
insight for the church. He is to be commended for both his
methodology and mindset concerning the scope of this most
critical theological topic.
Dr. Fred Chay, Assoc. Professor of Theology
Phoenix Seminary, Phoenix, AZ
President, Grace Line Ministries
“For if the trumpet makes an uncertain
sound who will prepare for battle?” (1 Cor 14:8, NKJV)
These words should echo deep in our souls as they assert
a truism which needs a resurrection if the gospel has any
hope of surviving its most recent enemy. The logic is simple---if
one must believe to be saved eternally, then what one must
believe is unavoidably the life-giving means through which
faith becomes ‘saving’ in the individual. Said
differently, “If the gospel makes an uncertain sound,
then who will be prepared for heaven?”
Dr. Hixson offers a detailed analysis of the current climate of confusion which
has so many disoriented concerning the gospel by which we are saved. In a case
study analysis, with the backdrop of postmodernism’s tentacled grip on
what can be truly known, Dr. Hixson invites the reader to both re-think and
re-affirm his own understanding and expression of The Gospel. The onslaught
against the gospel shows up in confusion about what one must believe to be
saved, as well as what one must preach to offer salvation. All the major missteps
in communicating the gospel are exposed, considered, and properly challenged
against the authority of the Scriptures. One could ask for little more, except
for greater clarity concerning the content of the gospel. Dr. Hixson provides
insight on this matter as well, offering (in summation) that the content of
saving faith for the proclamation of the gospel is that: Jesus Christ, the
Son of God, who died and rose again to pay the penalty for all sin, gives eternal
life to each one who trusts Him, and Him alone, for it.
If you care about a clear gospel, then you will want to add Getting the Gospel
Wrong to the truth shelf in your library; but only after you’ve spent
the time needed to get the point. And, of course, the point is to share a clear
and saving message to a confused world which is groping about in the dark for
the light of the gospel.
Dr. Fred R. Lybrand, Author and Senior Pastor
Northeast Bible Church, Garden Ridge, TX
In this important work Hixson stands firm
as a champion for the cause of the gospel. First, Hixson
stands for the clarity of the gospel. He defines the gospel
clearly from the text of Scripture and exposes the so-called
gospel messages of many today as inadequate. Second, Hixson
stands for the core of the gospel: salvation by grace alone
through faith in Christ alone. Hixson’s message is
greatly needed in our postmodern context of ambiguity and
will be heartily welcomed by all who stand on the grace of
God in Christ Jesus as the only hope for a lost world in
need of salvation.
Dr. Ken Gardoski, Professor of Theology
Baptist Bible Seminary, Clarks Summit, PA
Getting the Gospel Wrong delivers a potent, biblical, and timely message that
must be heard and heeded by the evangelical Church of our day. To this bewildered
generation that seems to have lost all sense of divine direction, Getting the
Gospel Wrong offers a desperately needed spiritual compass. Grounded on the
authority of God's Word, this well-researched, well-written book issues a clarion
call to return to the truth of the gospel of the grace of God. In so doing,
Dr. Hixson has effectively shined the light of the knowledge of the glory of
God upon the face of our Savior, Jesus Christ. May the Lord greatly use this
book to enlighten this generation and especially to stir the hearts of evangelicals
to believe solely in the truth of the gospel.
Tom Stegall, Pastor, Word of Grace Bible Church
Milwaukee, WI
Dr. Hixson is addressing a critical concern
in the Evangelical Churches of today. Many have taken the
wrong fork in the road, and he has directed us back to the
original fork, and guided us down the correct path. He is
like the watchman on the wall, declaring what is seen, and
what needs to be changed.
Andy Anderson, National Sales Manager
Logos Bible Software, Bellingham, WA
Dr. Hixson addresses in this volume the Kadesh-Barnea
of evangelical Christianity, namely, "What exactly is
the Gospel of eternal salvation?" In doing so, he accurately
and clearly not only expounds what the Gospel is based on
the Word of God, but also exposes some of the prominent false
gospels of our day. If you are passionate about the clarity
and purity of the Gospel of grace in our postmodern society
that disdains absolute truth, this is a book I recommend
that you carefully read.
Dennis Rokser, Pastor-Teacher
Duluth Bible Church, Duluth, MN
Dr. Hixson’s clear and incisive work
is distinct in its format and presentation. His treatise
of the content of the gospel and the nature of faith is worth
the read alone. In this day and age of getting the gospel
wrong, Dr. Hixson got it right!
Dr. Buck Anderson, Pastor, Leadership Development
Grace Bible Church, College Station, TX
Hixson’s scholarly approach toward these
relevant theological matters facing our postmodern milieu
make this an important read for all evangelicals. This book
sheds light on the errant soteriological assumptions behind
much of conventional church growth methodology and its undulating
effects that lead to unhealthy congregational growth.
Dr. Mike Ayers, Professor
College of Biblical Studies, Houston, TX
It is refreshing to see such a complex subject
covered with such passion and clarity. In this book Hixson
has succinctly and effectively reminded the church to keep
focus on being true to the true Christian Gospel. I encourage
lay people, pastors and professors to take the time to read
this exceptional work.
Joseph Parle, Academic Dean
College of Biblical Studies, Houston, TX
Whether from the radio or television or in church, people hear an amazing number
of presentations of "the gospel," many of which are in conflict with
the simple biblical truth. Dr. Hixson, in this book, takes on most of them.
This is a necessary book.
Bill Ball, Retired Bible College professor
Edmond, OK
Even though you might not agree with all of its content, a book like this ought
to be read to help you come to your own conclusions. It will certainly challenge
your thinking.
Dr. R. Larry Moyer, President and CEO
EvanTell, Inc., Dallas, TX
Dr. Hixson's book answers many questions that are being asked about the gospel
that is being so misrepresented throughout our country. Dr. Hixson is well
known in the theological circles and brings both a theological and pastoral
message addressing these issues. I recommend this book to anyone who is charged
with the responsibility of presenting the truth.
Rick Blount, Pastor, First Baptist Church
Jacinto City, TX
Getting the Gospel Wrong is the right book
for anyone trying to clear up the confusing "gospel" messages
about today. Hixson exposes unclear and unbiblical presentations
of the gospel, and helps readers understand how to simply
and clearly present the Good News!
Phil Congdon, Pastor
New Braunfels Bible Church, New Braunfels, TX
As I was reading Dr. Hixson's work I was struck
with the casual, if not careless, use of words I had lapsed
into through the years. All readers will be encouraged by
this work and the clear call it makes to stay within the
simple but profound presentation of the Gospel.
