A Forever Savior

Dr. J.B. Hixson
"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:11) A former student of mine serves as a pastor in Eastern Europe.  Together with his wife and children, he planted a church in one of the most difficult and dangerous mission fields in the world today.  He sent me a story about a thirteen year old orphan named Daniel who showed up at their church services recently, alone and unannounced.  Naturally, the church welcomed and embraced Daniel enthusiastically and he has been coming to church by ...

A Measure of Assurance?

Dr. J.B. Hixson
"And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand." (John 10:28) My favorite kind of cookie is chocolate chip.  There is scarcely anything better than a hot, just-out-of-the-oven, homemade chocolate chip cookie with a cold glass of milk.  When I was a teenager, I used to make them myself, using Mom's family recipe.  The first time I did, though, turned out to be quite a fiasco.  You see, the recipe card was so old and tattered from years of use that some of the instructions were hard ...

Slow Down and Save Time!

Dr. J.B. Hixson
See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. (Ephesians 5:15–16) So much of life comes down to perspective.  Perspective can mean the difference between joy and despair, between hope and despondency, between contentment and anxiety.  To the poet, a pearl is a teardrop of the sea. To the ladies, it is a treasured jewel they can wear around their necks. To the scientist, it is a lustrous concretion formed of multiple layers of nacre. It’s all about perspective.  A canny ...

God, Glory, and Sleepy Hollow

Dr. J.B. Hixson
Then she named the child Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.  (1 Samuel 4:21) Most of my grade school years were spent in the little western Connecticut down of Danbury.  As a child growing up in New England, I remember hearing many anecdotes and traditions from early American history.  Stories about Williamsburg, Salem, Mystic Seaport, Plymouth Rock, and other legendary sites captured my attention.  One of my favorites, though, ...

Hope in Exile

Dr. J.B. Hixson
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.  (Proverbs 13:12) Waiting is no fun.  Nobody knows this better than a child. When our oldest daughter was eight, we took her and her younger siblings to a neighbor’s swimming pool.  As we walked through the gate into the backyard, we instructed the children to wait by the pool until mom and dad had gotten settled in, and we were ready to watch them.  Bethany sat right on the edge of the pool, anxiously swinging her legs, eagerly awaiting the okay to jump ...

Don't Just Do Something, Stand There!

Dr. J.B. Hixson
Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11–12) Ralph and Margaret were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary—fifty years of love, faithfulness, and joy.  ...

True Love

Dr. J.B. Hixson
True Love “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:12–13) It is February, and that means that our thoughts turn to love.  People are always searching for love, aren’t they?  But sadly, to borrow the words of country singer Johnny Lee, most people are “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places.  Lookin' for love in too many faces.  Searchin' their eyes.  Lookin' for traces of what they’re dreaming of.” When it comes to ...

The World Needs More Fools

Dr. J.B. Hixson
Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. (1 Cor. 3:18) It is getting harder and harder to find a good fool these days.  My ministry travels took me across forty states last year, speaking in more than one hundred events.  And rarely did I come across a bona fide fool.  I had high expectations at one particular conference in Philadelphia.  Several hundred Christians packed into an auditorium on the campus of a conservative Bible college, and I was on the ...
